Bed bugs are small, wingless insects that feed solely upon their hosts’ blood. They are increasingly becoming a problem within residences of all kinds, including homes, apartments, hotels, cruise ships, dormitories, and shelters. Hatchling bed bugs are about the size of a poppy seed, and adults are about ¼ of an inch in length. From above they are an oval-shaped, but are flattened from top to bottom. When disturbed, bed bugs actively seek shelter in dark cracks and crevices, making them often hard to locate. Unfortunately, this often leads to a place of living which has bed bugs months before they are discovered. Bed bugs can be found primarily in bedrooms, living in mattresses, but can also be found on all furniture including couches, draperies, and carpets. They can also live in closets, around baseboards, and in any cracks and crevices surrounding a bed.

Adult bed bugs, in general, are:

• about the size of an apple seed (5-7 mm or 3/16 - 1/4 inch long);
• long and brown, with a flat, oval-shaped body (if not fed recently);
• balloon-like, reddish-brown, and more elongated (if fed recently);
• a “true bug” (characteristics of true bugs include a beak with three segments; antenna that have four parts; wings that are not used for flying; and short, golden-colored hairs) 
• smelly, with a “musty-sweetish” odor produced through glands on the lower side of the body.

There are many factors that make bed bugs difficult to handle. They are sometimes confused for other insect pests, and alternately, other insects are sometimes confused for bed bugs. Bed bugs’ secretive nature makes them difficult to find and eliminate. They do not respond to typical household bug sprays, some of which can spread bed bugs. Finally, panicked individuals often spread bed bugs throughout their home by dragging infected bed linens or mattresses through their home to the trash.

Since bed bugs live in a variety of places, a one size fits all approach will not work in controlling them. So, before any sort of treatment, we’ll inspect, review and recommend multiple solutions that are available to bring your bed bug problem under control. We take a sensitive and sympathetic approach recognizing how emotional and stressful a bed bug infestation may be.

Treatment will usually begin at the focal point of the infestation, which is generally the bed in an infested room. This will be followed by careful treatment of all items in the vicinity, including baseboards, floor/wall junctions, tack strips under carpets, behind electrical outlets and switches, cracks in walls and floors, items hanging on walls and relevant structural voids.
